The FIDO protocol uses public key cryptography as a means of strong authentication. During registration with an online service, the token generates a new key pair. While the private key remains in the token, the public key is entered at the service for the user. Authentication is achieved by signing a challenge with the private key. The private key is only used when the release button on the token is pressed.
