Most commercial e-mail applications has integrated functions for secure e-mail - spoken, they have S/MIME capabilities for using x.509 certificates. But not all clients are comfortable to use or fullfill interoperability requirements.
Add-Ons upgrade e-mail clients in their cryptography functions. Sometimes they are also necessary to communicate with a central server-module, which is taking central scanning on malicous code or content of encrypted e-mails.
