Installation

Download the newest driver (PC/SC) for your operating system (available are drivers for: Windows 98, ME, 2K,XP. Server 2003, x64-editions CE 4.1, 4.2, 5.0; Linux (Red Hat, Suse, Debian Sarge); MacOS X (10.3, 10.4 - CCID)) from the download-page of Gemalto: GemPC USB-SL - Software Download

DRun the installation program and plug in the reader into USB afterwards. The reader should be recognized immediately and can be used at once.

A first check!

A first functiontest can be done with Microsofts SC-STATUS. This is a small tool, which is showing all functioning PC/SC reader and their current state. Therefore inserted smart cards are also indicated.

Store this small program on your computer and execute it - it doesn't need any further installation. Now you see a small reader symbol int the system tray (right lower corner) - click on it an you see a window with all plugged smart card readers and their state. You should see a "Gemalto USB Smart Card Reader" - if you put in a smart card, you should see it too. (Please note, that only in the system registered smart cards are shown by name, all other smart cards are named as "unknown card", this is no reason disconcertment.

Download: SC-STATUS.EXE [44 KB] [44 KB] (reliable on Windows 2000 or higher)

If you see the message "The Smart Card System is not running. No status can be displayed at this time", then the Smart Card service on your system isn't running.

Troubleshooting

For proper access to smart cards with PC/SC smart card reader, the "Smart Card service" on Windows has to run. You will find the services in control panel/administrative tools/services.
