Magnetic Stripe |
The magnetic stripe (characteristic, encoding, placement) is specified in several ISO Standards like 7811. The band of magnetic material is usually placed on the backside of a card 5mm from the edge. Normally the stripe contain 3 tracks, the memory capacity is limited.
There are two varieties of magnetic stripes: HiCo (High Coercitivity) and LoCo (Low Coercitivity) which can be written (and erased) using different magnetic energy. HiCo stripes can be written with 2750 to 4000 Oersted, 300 Oested are sufficient for LoCo Cards, which eases unintentional deletion.
